One day the lift stopped working and never worked again. Considered an iconic failure, the social housing project Pruitt Igoe can partly blame its infamy on maintenance. The public money used to build the complex ( thanks to the Housing Act of 1949 ) did not include a maintenance budget. Money could not be found elsewhere to keep the project healthy. Pruitt Igoe rapidly degenerated and eventually was demolished.
