A 2018 pilot project promoted by the “Five Star Movement” ( political party ) in Italy put “Prisoner-gardeners” to work in Rome with the idea of developing and maintaining municipal gardens. Today the city employs 100 gardeners, much less than in the year 2000 when 1500 gardeners looked after the city.

The money saved by using this labor force and the educative and psychological benefits to inmates are the main arguments given to justify the project

Similar projects are planned in Milan, Palermo and Naples.
